I am the Jim Joseph Professor of Education and Jewish Studies at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education, where I direct the Concentration in Education and Jewish Studies.

My professional life is animated by two interlocking questions. How do people learn to be Jewish? And how do Jewish communities help people learn what they need to?

By my reckoning and my research, Jewish education includes everything from schools, synagogues, and summer camps to academic research, media, and ritual. My job is to reveal the often obscured and sometimes inscrutable inner workings that govern the ways that people and institutions engage with knowledge of Jewish life, culture, custom, and history.

I work closely with students, colleagues, and community partners on an array of projects aimed at revealing the hidden logics that animate Jewish learning and Jewish life.
